Lowest Price Last Man Standing / The Last Boy Scout (Action Double Feature) [Blu-ray]

While I have never seen The Last Boy Scout, I have seen Last Man Standing MORE than once! This is a great movie with LOTS of action! Bruce Willis plays "John Smith" a lone gunman who rolls into a town run by two feuding gangs and decides to go to work for the gang that pays the most. If your a fan of 20's era gangster films with LOTS of shooting, then this movie is about as good as it gets. Christopher Walken does an AMAZING job in this movie as well as Bruce Willis. Rated R for gunplay violence/killing, nudity and language.Get more detail about Last Man Standing / The Last Boy Scout (Action Double Feature) [Blu-ray].

Save Lost: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray]

i know this is a pre-review, but, barring some glaring technical glitch, this will be a truly great set. LOST is a show unlike any other in the history of the medium. not only is it a great show, with inspired acting, inspiring music, gorgeous photography, and trippy storylines... not only does it have deep characterizations and an even deeper mythology... not only is it cinematic in scope yet intimate in the smallest character moments... not only is it, like, totally addicting. it's also the first time (at least here in the u.s.) that a t.v. series has a complete beginning, middle and end, just as the creators intended it.

so many shows start out brilliantly, chug along for a while on that inspiration, then start to peter out somewhere along the way and then... stop (twin peaks). or, are episodic in nature and don't have the burden of having to *end* properly. but LOST started off with a bang, settled in with the characters and their predicament, started to repeat itself *just* a bit, then decided that it needed to end at a certain point and started it's long steady march toward it's denouement. and it's been nothing but greatness ever since.

it's often said that movies are like short stories, and t.v. is more like a novel.

well, we have our first truly great novel.Get more detail about Lost: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray].

Discount Fringe: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray]

After the surprising ending to Season 1 (I'll leave a lot of details out to avoid spoilers), we find ourselves with revelations to what has been happening, about things that Walter was up to in the good old days, and about the things that could happen if things continue on their strange - interesting - path. It all begins with a car and it all ends with a startling revelation coming to a head and forgiveness being asked for by someone that this viewer has come to love. The oddity, the bizarre people and the reasons behind everything: sometimes you think you are going to be doused with filler, only to find out you've actually unlocked a piece to the puzzle.

When you look at J.J.'s work, you notice how things are brought together for a reason. I like that, and I like the way that the mind can boggle at some of the twists and the turns that happen right under your nose. From Peter and the past that Walter did not ever want revealed to the Olivia that we did not know about so clearly in the past but have now come to understand, the show plays connect-the-dots well. It also delves into other subjects, addressing spirituality, the concept of love, forgiveness, and a drove of other items. These are things you don't expect from shows but find yourself handling, exploring, and needing in DVD form. Otherwise, you might miss out on something - and that would be a travesty.

Aside from the storytelling aspect of Fringe, there are the great actors that are evolving on the set. We have our four main cast members, a boss we have come to explore, a lady with secrets that seem bigger than the company she has, and even the scientist that works for her. all of these little cogs play their parts and play them well - otherwise the show wouldn't be what it is. There is a dynamic at play here, sometimes funny in the most bleak situations, and I have to say that I really love that. I also love the progressive idea moving through the show and the things that could happen if certain factions manage undo what people know as reality.

If only we could know what the Watchers know.

If you have not seen the show, stop and go get Season 1 now. If you thought Season 1 was anything but grand, continue here and find yourself inspired. I loved the show when it first came out and now, with the signing of two more seasons at least, we know it will have time to develop. so, get the episodes, the parts you missed out on because of cuts, the commentary, and everything else this DVD offers. It is well worth obtaining and a sad thing to leave behind.

Cheapest Showgirls (15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition) [Blu-ray]

A beautiful drifter (Elizabeth Berkeley) blows into Las Vegas and finds success as the understudy of a big time stripper (Gina Gershon). But at what cost?

This film has long had the reputation of being one of the all-time Hollywood turkeys, and I must say that for once a film has lived up to its hype. "Showgirls" is such a naked look into the retarded sexuality of screenwriter Joe Ezsterhas and director Paul Verhoeven that it would have made Freud blush. It is, however, good for several unintended laughs. You can definitely enjoy this if you're in the right frame of mind and don't harbor any unrealistic expectations--such as seeing a halfway decent movie.

Cheap Planet Terror (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray]

After seeing Grindhouse in the theaters, it became an instant favorite of mine. I've gone through a few DVDs so far (US DVD and Japanese 8-disc set) before getting the blu-ray - I have to say there definitely is an upgrade here (despite the old/torn up/dragged through the dirt look of the film). I'll start off by saying that it looks exactly as it was intended to look (and I hate it whenever people say that, as it usually means "It doesn't look that good, but it's not supposed to, so I give it 5 stars") - there is a significant increase in the sharpness of the film, but the blu-ray also includes an exclusive version of the film without the "grindhouse look" - a nice clean print if you ever just want to sit down and watch it without all of the damage (a very cool extra, even if just to check out). Overall the video is a significant jump from the DVD Release and looks very nice. Great audio track to go along with the video - definitely a fun action/horror movie to sit back and crank up the volume to. All extras from the DVD release are carried over and round out the package nicely (the only new extra being the scratch-free version mentioned above)

For anyone who has seen Grindhouse in theaters, it's important to note that this is only the Planet Terror portion of the film - it has been extended (almost half an hour longer) - this may be a good or bad thing based on which version you like. I personally like both versions (extended individual versions and the double-feature) for different reasons - currently, the double-feature isn't available on DVD or Blu Ray in the US, so there aren't many options.

What could have made it better? Picture in picture track and all of the theatrical trailers on the disc (currently the disc only has Machete on it).

If you don't have it on any format, I highly recommend it. It's a nice zombie/action movie - don't expect too many scares, but if you want to sit back and have a fun time, this is the perfect movie. If you own it on DVD, I still recommend the upgrade to the Blu Ray for the extra feature (scratch-free version) and the significant A/V upgrade.Get more detail about Planet Terror (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray].

Buying Fist of Legend [Blu-ray]

I've loved this movie since I was a kid and so I was stoked when I saw it was coming to BD. I just got it today and put it into the PS3. The movie's still as great as ever, both picture and audio. However the subtitles for the movie are horribly inaccurate. As a Cantonese speaker it feels as if the people the wrote the subtitles watched the movie on mute and were just guessing at what the actors were saying. So while I could get along fine with Chinese audio alone, I depend on the subtitles for the Japanese parts. Since the Chinese parts were so off I can only assume that the Japanese parts may well be too. I'm sure the subs would probably convey a cogent story, but just know that it may not be exactly the one the director intended it to. If it weren't for this I'd probably give it a 5 but since the subtitles are probably needed for the viewers who don't understand both Chinese and Japanese, 3 stars.Get more detail about Fist of Legend [Blu-ray].

Order The Thomas Crown Affair [Blu-ray]

I'm not going to do a movie critique. The Affair's remake is more than 10 years old and everything worth saying about contents, cinematography and actors' acting and looks has been said already. Suffices for me to say that this is a flick I enjoy watching whenever I feel like relaxing, probably because I like watching Pierce Brosnan. Also, it turns out, The Thomas Crown Affair was the first DVD I ever bought - selection was scarce back in 1999. Which partially explains why I ordered the Blu-ray. Sadly, what the postman brought was somewhat disappointing.

So, here is my objective evaluation of the Blu-ray edition.

- It comes in a cheap case. The kind with holes cut into the plastic walls so that maybe a couple of pennies are saved this way.
- It includes both the Blu disc and a double-sided DVD with the so-called 'full screen' on one side and the 'wide screen' version on the other.
- There are no extras whatsoever on the Blu disc.
- The DVD disc, apparently has one 'extra' - audio commentary by director John McTiernan
- Sound is 5.1 DTS-HD
- Alternative soundtracks are available in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese as 5.1 DTS and in mono for Russian, Hungarian, Turkish and Thai.

The Blu-ray transfer is just okay. The movie looks and sounds good but I imagine there is some industrial process these days where you throw a DVD into the Blu-ray converter machine and the Blu version comes out automatically - better than the DVD and not much human artist or technician intervention is required. There is nothing outstanding or worth writing about when it comes to this Blu-ray upgrade, other that my brand new, first time watched, unscratched copy skips in two places.

This is the first Blu-ray disc ever that skipped on my player. After almost 3 years of Blu-ray watching, I didn't know what Blu-ray skipping looks like. Now I know - the picture disappears for a few seconds, then it reappears. I know that it's skipping, not an equipment issue because I replayed the parts that skipped and was able to reproduce it - probably due to some low quality, cheap process used to produce the discs.

I really hesitated between a 3-star rating which means "It's Okay" and a 2-star which stands for "I don't like it". In the end, the "I don't like it" won. I can't recommend this Blu-ray as a purchase, especially to those who already have the DVD. I understand that studios need to make money but, my friends, the quality of this release borders 'junk' grade and we should not encourage the proliferation of such releases by buying them. I am sorry I spent money on my copy and, had I known before ordering what I know now, I would not have placed my order.Get more detail about The Thomas Crown Affair [Blu-ray].

Carlito's Way [Blu-ray]

CARLITO'S WAY (1993), directed by Brian DePalma, is a true modern day gangster masterpiece! I have loved this film ever since I first saw it back in the 90s. It's one of those movies that I would watch over and over again. Even today, I am amazed at how much this film holds up. In a lot of ways, CARLITO'S WAY is one of the most involving of all gangster films because it allows the viewer to get into the thought process of the protagonist Carlito Brigante (played by the great Al Pacino in a vastly underrated performance) through his narration of the tale. Pacino is so convincing and persuasive in the role that the viewer literally feels as if we are going through this character's journey to redemption along with him.

In 1975, released 5 years into a 30-year prison sentence, aging, world-weary Carlito Brigante (Pacino), a former New York drug lord of Puerto Rican descent, is determined to go straight and leave his past mistakes and sins behind him. His goal is to make enough money to escape his former life and start a legitimate business in the Bahamas. But along the way, he runs into some of his former colleagues as well as new threats that want to "pull him back in" and finds that it will be more difficult than he imagined.

One of the threats turns out ironically to be Carlito's lawyer David Kleinfeld (Sean Penn in a brilliant, Oscar-caliber performance) who manipulated his release from prison on a technicality. While Carlito's story goes in one direction (redemption), Kleinfeld's story goes the opposite as he, on the surface looks clean cut, is shown to really be a coke addict and mob attorney that has stolen a million dollars from one of his clients. The two men's stories work as a superb contrast against one another, but also intersect as Carlito's inability to completely escape his street life and instincts and his blind dedication to Kleinfeld eventually lead to his downfall.

During his path to redemption, Carlito seeks out his former lover Gail (beautiful Penelope Ann Miller in a heartbreaking, sensuous performance), a dancer who works a dead end job at a strip club, but has goals of her own. Carlito convinces Gail that they can start anew and escape their past to have a bright future.

In addition to Penn and Miller, the superb supporting cast includes John Leguiziamo (convincing as up and coming thug Benny Blanco who idolizes Carlito), Luiz Guzman (funny as Carlito's right hand man Pachanga), Viggo Mortensen (memorable cameo as Carlito's former gangster colleague and now wheelchair-bound Lalin), Adrian Pasdar (as the son of one of Kleinfeld's mob clients), Ingrid Rogers (as entertainer in Carlito's club), and James Rebhorn (as the district attorney out to nail Kleinfeld). This is one of the rare epic films where I felt that all the supporting cast were perfectly cast and there are no extraneous characters that gum up the works!

Pacino essays one of his more complex roles and works in perfect synergy with his supporting cast throughout. But in addition to Pacino's strong performance (which includes his pitch perfect narration), it is DePalma's tight, focused direction that is also a major reason this film holds up so well this many years later. The period detail of the mid 1970s is authentic, yet the film isn't "lost" in the 70s. That is, DePalma doesn't overdo it with the hairstyles, clothes, etc; the club music is an eclectic choice of good 70s songs (mostly Hispanic obviously) that help set the tone and mood of the club scenes without devolving into parody. And it is such a character-driven story that you almost don't care when it takes place! The cinematography is top notch and about as good as any I've seen in a major film in the modern era. The sad, tragic score works well also as it complements the tragedy of Carlito. The great closing sequence is about as good as one will ever see in any movie: a perfect mix of action, pacing, shots, drama, and music.

I have the dvd as part of my collection and whether you are a "movie" lover or a "film" lover, either way, CARLITO'S WAY has got you covered!Get more detail about Carlito's Way [Blu-ray].

From Paris with Love [Blu-ray] Review

I absolutely do not agree with any of the negative reviews. I received this as a gift and can only say that it exceeded my expectations. Travolta surprised, and for a guy that has done as much as he has, that is saying a great deal.

This is a five star movie, each of the actors is solid as a rock, the ending is a complete surprise, and overall I found the story line, the scripting, and the action scenes to be totally coherent and extremely well-executed.Get more detail about From Paris with Love [Blu-ray].

Pandorum [Blu-ray] Top Quality

If you liked Event Horizon and you liked The Descent, there's a decent chance you're going to like this.

It has a bit more of a mystery, so it starts a little slow, but I think it's got great production value and direction. If you haven't checked out this director's previous flick "Antibodies", I'd also recommend that. (though it's subtitled, so be aware)

Armageddon [Blu-ray] This instant

I have mixed feelings about the movie on blue-ray.

On one hand I was really dissapointed that the blu-ray version of the film had cut the extra scenes from the Criterion DVD version of the movie. The scene where Willis visits his father explains the "God gave us children so we would have roses in winter." With the storage capacity of blu-ray the only reason I can think of for them leaving out the extra footage is they want to package another blu-ray verison later and get us for another $20-$30.

On the other hand the sound and picture were great, but not enough (IMHO) to warrant purchasing it in blue-ray if you already own the DVD version.Get more detail about Armageddon [Blu-ray].

Daybreakers [Blu-ray] Immediately

Set in the future, Vampires rule and have toppled man. They have made the world fit their needs but they have turned so many that the problem is they have exhausted the human blood supply and now the poorer Vampires are turning into monsters while our reluctant hero works on a blood substitute.

Such a promising beginning in a visual setting. Enter the human resistance and things are still o.k. but start sliding downhill and all of a sudden it happens and the movie looses track and pace and becomes I know not what. Some kind of drama that it was ill suited for and there it stays on track in a bad way with very little going for it.

After such a promising and good start I felt duped at the end and might just as well skipped seeing it through. Just as with the blood levels in the Vampires coffee which we are shown that constantly drop (now serving 25% blood - Now serving 5% blood etc) so too does the quality of the movie go down. I'll give it 2 stars for the fantastic start even if I am not sure if the whole deserves so much. If you are unsure rent it first.Get more detail about Daybreakers [Blu-ray].

The Road [Blu-ray] Best Quality

What makes this story so good is that it's as real as it can be. There are no special effects, no heroes, no computer generated fight scenes. It's just a film about a man and his son, against what's left of the world and anyone else that has survived in it. It's not a pretty film; it's not a romantic film, but still it's hauntingly touching and realistic.

The film is dark, and at times, there are a few scenes in the film that are disturbing and hard to stomach. Overall, the movie did leave a lasting impression on me. How could it not? In the midst of a disaster, what's the scariest thing in the world one could be faced with? For me, the answer to this question would be trying to save your child's life, and trying to survive and hold onto your own life for the sake of saving that child's life.

You want action and animated special effects? Don't see this film. If you are looking for something a little more realistic, a little more human (cause let's face it, in real life people die, people don't conveniently find guns laying around when they need it and we all don't posses the ability to flip up in the air and bounce off walls, if we're faced with a life or death situation) then, hey this film could be for you.

Here's a fair warning for those who have children or that are surrounded by children in their lives, this film may depress you and may even make you cry. It may even give you insight on the lives of homeless people, but that's just my opinion.Get more detail about The Road [Blu-ray].

Flash Gordon [Blu-ray] (1980) Get it now!

Here's a hint on how to proceed when watching this film: THIS IS A MELODRAMA! Dino de Laurentis said as much while promoting the film when it was first released. Every costume, every facial expression, and much of the dialog was meant to be over the top (and it is). de Laurentis wanted the film to be like a comic book come to life. Stagecoach (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] Order Now

I am and have been a fan of John Wayne for many years but more so in the past couple of years. I have purchased EVERY movie that John was in, good, bad or worse, including the years of his 30's. I recently obtained his first ever movie, "The Big Trail". WOW! Out of my library, I have donated to our local library the movies that I watched, did not care for and would not mind if my collection was missing them.

This movie however, WILL NEVER become separated from my collection. When I saw this one for the first time, I fell in love all over again. Clair, John, Andy and all the others were fantastic. Every time I see John's first appearance on screen, he twirls that rifle to cock it, I fall in love all over again and again with great acting. There are simply too many great scenes to name them all.

I will not rehash the plot, as one prior review detailed it perfectly. I have the collectors addition of StageCoach. I am looking forward to this particular release and will buy it when it comes out. IF I like this one better than the one I currently have, I will donate it also to the library. The librarian informed me that our town here in the heart of Montana if full of John Wayne fans and that since my donations of all my John Wayne dvd's, their "check outs" for the libraries dvd section has tripled in the first 6 months of the fiscal year. SO, moral of the story, John Wayne still lives on in our hearts. If I could depart here with one thought for those who like to pick apart movies, it would be this.

Movies of old are the foundations for the today movies. I however, prefer the "real" movies where we had "real" actors. Those who did their own stunts, where they did not have all these special effects from digital computers. Where the actors themselves had to ACT!! What we have today is a sham of the past. Even my grandson of 5yrs prefers a John Wayne movie to anything of today. The actors of yesteryear were made of "True Grit". Instead of picking apart our heritage of classics with negative reviews of the shoulda coulda thoughts, lets just simply enjoy what the screen and reels have to offer us. GREAT entertainment that all members of the family can enjoy. WHat a legacy we have been endowed with. So, sit back, get the popcorn and drinks ready for a GREAT and FANTASTIC acting and story line. The ending, is what it should be....the ride into the sunset for the "and they lived happily ever after".....Get more detail about Stagecoach (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray].

Low Price Legion [Blu-ray]

I went into this movie knowing that it was going to be cheesy and over the top...I mean, the preview alone clues you in that this movie doesn't completely take itself seriously. Gun-wielding angels? Spider-like ice cream truck driver? Come on. That being said, I left the theater both pleased and a bit surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie.

The fact is, if you hold this movie up to classic films, obviously it's going to fall short. If you hold it up to other campy films of it's kind, it's going to fit perfectly. The acting is sub-par, the plot is obviously pretty ridiculous, and the ending is predictable (for the most part.) Okay, well name me another campy film that doesn't have those qualities?

I, myself, am personally not interested in going to the theaters to see movies that are so called "works of art." If I wanted to see a work of art, I'd go to the museum. I go to the movies to see big explosions, elaborate fight scenes, and crazy and unbelievable storylines. So, if you're like me, ignore all the negative feedback on this movie and check this one out, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

To all you hoity toity reviewers out there that think if you use big words and "sophisticated" jokes you'll be the next Roger Ebert...don't quit your day job. And if you think you could make a better film...why don't you? Go write up a screenplay and pitch it...let the world see what wonderous things your imagination can muster up. I guess it all comes back to that old saying though, "Those who can't do...criticize."Get more detail about Legion [Blu-ray].

Save Tombstone [Blu-ray]

In my opinion, the Blu-ray format simply isn't for all movies or shows. For instance I don't see the sense in watching say, "Breakfast Club" in Blu-ray. That being said, this is definitely one of those movies that I was happy to see finally released on Blu-ray. I also feel the need to say that of the two movies that were released "Coincidentally" within the same time-frame this one is without doubt the better of the two, the other being the movie titled "Wyatt Earp" starring Kevin Costner. I suppose I just have this thing about Kevin Costner being in a movie, except I thought "Dances With Wolves" was a great movie, yet even then I find myself imagining different actors in that role, and well I'd probably cast Kurt Russell in that movie as well.

THE DVD and BLU-RAY FORMAT:

Sorry, getting back with Tombstone, from a Blu-ray standpoint I enjoyed the crisp detail and in contrast to another review felt that the Audio sounded great. I was, however, disappointed that the release did not include the Director's Cut and wonder why Blu-ray releases continue to make this mistake with excluding other versions since I as remember when the format had first debuted that extra content such as this was one of the great features of having so much more room.

THE MOVIE and CASTING:

As far as the movie and the story, this well so well cast that I was surprised that it didn't win just a ton of awards. Kurt Russel as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday was brilliant. This along with a cameo appearance of Charlton Heston and the remaining cast of Sam Elliot, Dana Delany, and Bill Paxton just to name a few recreated a legend that will forever mark what the Western Frontier and the rewards and sacrifices that came along with it was all about; A truly excellent film.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

A lot of people think my best friend looks exactly like Kevin Costner and I suppose I see the likeness. I also wonder what "Dances with Wolves" would have been like with say Christian Slater, James Spader, Edward James Olmos, or even Edward Norton?

I give Tombstone the Blu-ray version a 9 out of 10 - 1 point for not having the Director's Cut included.
However Tombstone the Movie a 10 out of 10!Get more detail about Tombstone [Blu-ray].

Discount Invictus (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Invictus is a movie set in South Africa just after Nelson Mandala is elected president. Faced with the potential of a civil war, Mandela is looking for ways to unite a South Africa torn apart by apartheid. Mandela zeroes in on the nation's rugby team - the springboks. The springboks are a team that every black in South Africa, including Mandela himself, would root against hoping the other team, no matter who they were, would win. Now the new president gets behind the team hoping the team can win the rugby world cup and help to unite the country with a common cause.

Invictus is well cast and well acted, although you can hear Morgan Freeman's accent slip every now and then. Matt Damon's accent is impeccable. The tension between the blacks and white was, at times, so thick you could cut it with a knife. The white people are expecting to lose everything when the new regime takes over the country. Time and time again, Mandela shows both sides what true forgiveness is.

One of my few criticisms of Invictus is the slums. The movie does get the appropriate reaction from the audience when they show the slums, the shanty-type buildings built from bits and pieces of scrap metal and wood. However, the slums were too clean. Normally, you'll see used tires on the roofs holding them down against the wind and garbage all over the place. The slums in Invictus were simply too clean to be real slums.

My other problem is with a scene in which a jetliner buzzes the stadium where the rugby world cup is being held. The build-up to this scene is as if something ominous is going to happen. A jetliner really did buzz the stadium just before the 1995 rugby world cup. At that time, pre-9/11, this would have been seen as a harmless, even patriotic, stunt. Post 9/11, this is viewed as a potential terror attack. The movie plays this up as an impending threat, which did add to the tension of the movie, but it should have been played up as a harmless stunt.

Overall, this is an excellent movie showing the genius of Nelson Mandela's forgiveness of people and his ability to unite a country.Get more detail about Invictus (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy).

Cheap Edge of Darkness (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

"Edge of Darkness" is a Boston passion play in which Mel Gibson devours a whole grief pizza loaded with paternal rage and extra cheese, interrogates a bunch of nerve-jangled Chowdahs and finally blows some snarling corporate villains away with his big, loud gun. Like most Gibson films - even the ones he doesn't direct - it's so melodramatic and emotionally lurid that you're either captured by the mood or you sit outside of it, startled by the absurdity.

Mix "Taken" with the cynicism and dark wit of "The Departed" and you have this film; Baby Boomers may like it because all of the twentysomethings in the movie are idiots and pawns - which is roughly where Boomers like twentysomethings to remain - while it champions blarney like righteous vengeance and booze in the afternoon. I appreciated it for the big-eared Senator in a track suit.

Mousy scientist Emma Craven (Bojana Novakovic, a cute Serb with bangs) harbors some secret about the shadowy weapons company she interns at; before she can tell her Boston cop dad Thomas (Gibson) about it, a masked gunman pumps a couple barrels into her chest on Tom's doorstep. Cue Gibson staring into space as a sign of rage, and "hey, it's that guy!" Jay O. Sanders showing up as Tom's chummy chief.

Ray Winstone co-stars as a world-weary Somebody Hired By Someone named Jedburgh to follow Craven around while he knocks on the doors of Emma's freaked-out boyfriend and best friend, who employ 20-cent accents and conduct themselves as if they'd just sucked hard on a meth pipe.

Jedburgh smokes cigars and sips champagne lunches on park benches, aristocratic villains (Danny Huston and Damian Young) smell of malfeasance and faint homosexuality, and Gibson stalks around in his moralistic, legalistic manner, invoking, at one point, the crucifixion of Jesus. The meaning of life is frequently discussed by the elders; the lines of dialogue have been shorn like a dog in summer so that you have no earthly clue what Craven and Jedburgh are really talking about. At the end we are essentially told Craven is "saved" for his actions, which, given the events of "Edge of Darkness," is among the most pharisaical interpretations of the gospel I can imagine, right up there with Denzel Washington's body count in "Man On Fire."Get more detail about Edge of Darkness (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy).

Purchase Alice in Wonderland [Blu-ray]

I can't speak for the DVD, but I saw this movie in the theater and was disappointed. I know Disney already did a good animated version of Alice In Wonderland, so perhaps this was supposed to be an update. And it does look good . . . It's done by Tim Burton, so what else? The animation is state of the art, if more than a little creepy in places, but the real disappointment is the story. For one; it isn't Alice In Wonderland. And it's not Through the Looking Glass, either. What we have here is really "Alice Grows Up and Goes Back To Wonderland." In this story, instead of nonsense, we have a rather clichéd, "classic battle of good against evil," updated. So if you like the "chicks rule" mindset, you might approve, but calling it Alice In Wonderland is rather a deception. Of course, if you're a Tim Burton fan, as many of us are, this is a real feast for the eyes, and it may even wear well with time.Get more detail about Alice in Wonderland [Blu-ray].

Order Minority Report [Blu-ray]

This is a review of the BD version of the film. I am sure most reading know the atory, so I won't get into all of that, though it must be said it is a chliing. exciting, and brilliant vision of the future down to its details. I have seen a couple of reviews that note the issue of "grain" on the image. Here's the deal with that...the grain is supposed to be there. The most common misconception about bluray is that it offers a more enhanced and retouched version of a film. High Definition lets you see the film as it was intended by the filmmakers. Mostb SD DVD has been treated with something called Digital Noise Reduction (DNR). This wipes the image so that it is smooth and waxy. It also distorts the colors, textures, and the original artistic vision. Bluray provides deeper colors, blacks, eliminates edge enhancement, halos, and other issues. Minority Report is intended and was shot to have a gritty feel, hence the grain. This is how the film is supposed to look. It has a kind of washed out, skip bleached look with lots of swirling film grain. This creates an emotional impact that informs the story and the characters. This movie looks fabulous. The grain renders the fine details and textures much harder to see in 480i. 1080p allows us to see it as it looked in the editing bay. Colors are fully accurate and resolved. Blacks are inky and detail is gorgeous, making the special effects all the more dazzling. This transfer was closely supervised and approved by Spielberg. It is the best this film will ever look and the HD DTS soundtrack is tight, robust and exciting. This is one of the films I have been waiting to see in this format and it exceeded my expectations.Get more detail about Minority Report [Blu-ray].

Where To Buy Shutter Island [Blu-ray]

I have to admit that I love the DiCaprio/Scorsese combo. Shutter Island is a great film, with a predictable "twist". However it was the circumstances of the "twist" that blew me away. Scorsese's genius is that he isn't trying to hide the truth from you. All the clues are there. Regardless of how predictable I found the film, it didn't at all take away from the enjoyment. DiCaprio gives a wonderful performance as US Marshall Teddy Daniels. While Daniels is suppose to be there investigating an escape, he has his own agenda on Shutter Island.Get more detail about Shutter Island [Blu-ray].

Shop For War of the Worlds [Blu-ray]

Granted I have not watched this since it's theatrical release, I must say that this was one of the worst films I have ever watched. I'm not one to pay for a movie and then walk out because I always have hope that a sinking film will somehow miraculously stay afloat, the Hollywood-way. Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and Steven Spielberg - how can you go wrong, right? I can't think of anything that went right! The story was contrived and honestly, was there really that much of a story in the film? No, there wasn't. The attempt to pull your heart strings at the end of the film was transparent and laughable. Even the effects seem very blah, even for the time when the film was made. All I remember is waiting for the film to end and getting annoyed at the incessant screaming from Fanning. Save your money or use it to buy some good Science Fiction, like Alien (The Director's Cut) or Aliens (Two-Disc Collector's Edition), which are 5-star classics so please stop comparing this drivel to them.Get more detail about War of the Worlds [Blu-ray].

Bought this movie after reading all the reviews and gotta say I sure don't agree. Kelly's Heroes/Where Eagles Dare (Action Double Feature) [Blu-ray] Top Quality

There might have been a time when reasonable people could debate whether Clint Eastwood deserved to be included in the pantheon of 'Great Film Makers.' As we enter the second decade of the 21st century however, it appears to be unanimous. So I would like to nominate Mr. Eastwood for a new award: 'The Greatest Career in Film.'

For starters, how many actors can go from action star to movie star to a three decade dynasty as top-grossing icon? But, while his fans were reading the Hollywood rags to find out when the next "Dirty Harry" sequel was to be released, Eastwood had already been busy for almost as long honing his skills as a director. Beginning in 1971 with not one but two films - "The Beguiled" and then "Play Misty for Me" - he brought the same steely resolve as the characters he played in front of the camera to his work behind the camera. Many directors would be satisfied and proud to win two best director Oscars and the praise of most critics in an entire career but Mr. Eastwood accomplished it in half the time while essentially working two jobs. He starred in a few dozen films while directing himself and many other increasingly notable and serious dramatic actors. As a sign of his prowess behind the camera, several of those actors have gone on to win Oscars with him at the helm; Sean Penn, Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins just to mention a few. As for Mr. Eastwood's two Oscars, they stand as two exclamation points, each one added to emphasize his remarkable achievements in BOTH arenas. Is there any doubt now that his name is as often modified by the word director as it is by the term movie star?!

If there is anyone out there who remains unconvinced about Mr. Eastwood's talent and integrity as a film maker, rent or buy some of his early films such as "Coogan's Bluff", "Where Eagles Dare" or "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot." My absolute favorite is "Kelly's Heroes." As an increasingly popular actor, his influence and imprimatur is undeniable in his choice of projects. To watch them is to become a fan of Clint Eastwood. You may not like the subject or genre but his movies are always first rate and well-constructed. That realization is fully manifested in Kelly's Heroes. Forget any apologies or qualifications about comedic efforts or in which genre it belongs, "Kelly's Heroes" is the best war film of all time. No, that isn't an exaggeration from a die hard fan. It is the natural conclusion after years of research watching ANY movie that could even tangentially be considered a war movie. There are indeed some good ones, and the best tend to dramatize the brutality and insanity of war. So when one takes a different route and exposes the greed and profiteering, undeniable constants in any conflict, and does so in a humorous way, should that somehow disqualify it from consideration as a great or artistic work? Watch Kelly's Heroes again, or for the first time if you were one of those poor souls locked up in a Soviet Gulag in Siberia. Watch a movie that is beautifully produced with a score and cinematography that is nonpareil.

To such a beautifully looking and sounding work add Mr. Eastwood, Donald Sutherland in a hysterical performance as the anachronistic hippy tank commander, Telly Savalas as the perfectly cast master-seargent promoted to cat-hearder desperately trying to keep a misfit unit together, befuddled by Eastwood's brilliant but treasonous leadership, and a plot that is as insane as it is believable. Who wouldn't do what Kelley and his little band of heroic entrepreneurs did if given the same opportunity...

I'm not going to reveal any more of the story and spoil this movie for anyone who might have forgotten this gem of a film. If you ever find yourself stuck inside on a rainy Saturday or Sunday afternoon, grab a big bowl and the whole box of microwave popcorn. While those molecules start getting excited, your's should as well. That should give you enough energy to get the DVD and turn on the TV. As inspiration, we like to play 'Beat the Microwave Clock' in our house: Before the bag and popcorn acquire the color and consistency of charcoal, start the movie and while the endless, insanity-producing FBI warning and remote-disabling previews run on, sprint to the refrigerator, grab your beverage of choice, lots of paper towls and a big bowl. As rationalization for the buttery-flavored blends, you can subtract the calories you burn as you buzz through the house in ravenous anticipation. If you are really good or well-practiced, and the kitchen is on the same floor, you should be able to punch the microwave escape hatch before the buzzer sounds and you have to start looking for the step-stool so you can unplug all the smoke detectors...

The trick is remain calm and remember to grab the popcorn bag by the corners. Movies just aren't as much fun when you have to watch them with bandages on your hands and ringing in your ears.

Even if you burn the popcorn and your hands, I promise you will quickly forget as you become immersed in what is simply a great and thrilling story. What I can't guarantee is how your sides will feel after you spend the entire afternoon laughing...Get more detail about Kelly's Heroes/Where Eagles Dare (Action Double Feature) [Blu-ray].

The Wolfman [Blu-ray] This instant

Before I saw this movie, I had read some pretty varied reviews about it, so I wasn't really sure of what to expect. I was quite happy with what I found, however.
First, I will list my impressions, and then I'll discuss the story (without too many spoilers, I hope :P). This is a dark film, and it can really immerse you. It is a bit gory, but you get so wrapped up in what's going on that it seems more like it belongs than not -- particularly as a counterbalance to the desire of the viewer to preserve (one of) the wolf-folk involved, as it shows just what devastation he causes. (Although, for viewers with kids, it's more than you'd probably want young ones watching.) The characters were well crafted, and -- even the very eccentric ones -- seemed believable. There were only one or two times, for me, when things seemed a little too "over the top". As far as casting, I thought it was perfect; Del Toro's Lawrence Talbot is perfectly dark and tragic; Emily Blunt's Gwen is ideal; Hopkin's Sir Talbot is perfectly monstrous (but in a good way!); Weaving's Inspector is equally well done; and the various superstitious/prejudiced/frightened villagers were superb in their roles.
Alright, on to the story -- and be warned, there will be **spoilers** here, although I will try to keep them to a minimum.

The story revolves around Lawrence Talbot, who receives a letter from his (recently dead) brother's fiance, Gwen Conliffe. He returns home to learn about his brother (Ben Talbot)'s death; the death of his brother aside, this is not, as you learn later (and guess immediately, by Del Toro's expressions), a pleasant return. His father -- who sent him to an asylum as a child after he witnessed the grisly death of Lady Talbot -- is morbidly distant and unconcerned, but Gwen is genuinely grieved and searching for answers. Ben's death was not only a murder, but a particularly gruesome one, and Gwen asks Lawrence to help find the killer. He sets out to do so.
Ben was torn to shreds in an inexplicable manner and left in a ditch, although some of the villagers "explain" the death by attributing it to a dancing bear that travels with some gypsies who have set up camp nearby, and others attribute the death to the work of a madman. Lawrence finds a clue that points him toward the Gypsies, so he goes to speak with them. It just so happens that -- you guessed it -- the night that he rides out is the night of a full moon.
Lawrence's investigative work is cut short by a werewolf attack on the camp; and Lawrence ends up with a life threatening wound. Gwen stays at the Hall to tend him. After a length of time, this wound rather miraculously heals; the doctor who attends Lawrence is stunned by this fact, and Lawrence is not a little surprised himself.
The next full moon arrives, and Lawrence -- seeing his father sneaking to his mother's crypt -- follows. He proceeds into a dungeon-ish room, where Sir Talbot locks himself away after a cryptic warning.
Lawrence witnesses part of his father's transformation, and turns into a werewolf himself; he proceeds to run about doing werewolf-like things (you know, ripping people to shreds and other such naughty behaviors) before collapsing/returning to human state on his father's property.
Lawrence is captured and taken back to the asylum, where he is tortured -- as well as taunted by his father who comes to "visit". Sir Talbot, when Lawrence suggests that he kill himself, declares that he will certainly not, but instead plans to keep letting the wolf take over rather than hiding every full moon in the dungeon. He also reveals that it was he who killed Ben after an argument and a bout of drinking, as well as reveals how he became a werewolf -- and the truth about Lawrence's mother's death.
The asylum incarceration continues until that full moon, when the werewolf emerges again and breaks free (destroying all that gets in his path). After returning to his human state, Lawrence seeks temporary refuge with Gwen, and then heads back to Talbot Hall to confront his father.
Gwen, meanwhile -- her and Lawrence's relationship having progressed from mutual grief at Ben's death to love -- seeks out a cure for lycanthropy -- and races to get to Lawrence before harm (or the redoubtable inspector, who has been doggedly tailing him from early on) finds him.
All of this leads to a hair-raising search through the ghoulish manor, a terrific fight, and a sad but necessary end -- with an interesting catch.

All in all, to reiterate, I thought the movie was very well done, with only a few things I would have liked changed. The acting was excellent, with only two or three lines of Del Toro's that I think could have been done better -- but, otherwise, his work was absolutely superb.
Wolfman is probably not a good one for youngsters because of the dark story and gore, but otherwise darkness/gore was appropriate.
It is not a work of genius, but all the pieces fit together very well, and stand up to scrutiny.
Finally, I would also like to note that some of the objections to Wolfman centered around the romance between Gwen and Lawrence -- namely, that there wasn't "more". I disagree; remember that Gwen is sincerely grieving Ben's death, and this romance is "accidental". If Gwen and Lawrence found themselves "in love" immediately -- or soon after -- one would be disinclined to think much of Ben and Gwen's bond, or of the character of either fiancé or brother. So, I think it was well done -- a natural, "accidental" progression.

All in all, a very good film.

Beauty and the Beast (Three-Disc Diamond Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo w/ Blu-ray Packaging) Immediately

Ever since I was small Beauty and the Beast has been my favorite Disney movie, however that being said, my small sister who is currently ten could not watch it without being scared until just recently. The beginning of the movie does have some dark scenes that could scare children. It also has strong magic overtones if that is something that bothers you. That being said Beauty and the Beast is the only movie with a set strong-willed princess (Mulan & Pocohantas & Enchanted ladies excluded). Life (narrated by David Attenborough) [Blu-ray] Get it now!

I just bought the blu-ray from Amazon.uk, couldn't wait for the US release (and when you live in Brazil the freight cost pretty much the same from there), and there is nothing else to add about the documentary, it just has all the BBC quality already demonstrated on others like Planet Earth, but I was amazed with the image quality, they really improved that on Life, some images are even more clear than in Baraka (which is a high standard when it comes to image quality). Just a note for those buying it from Amazon.uk: the blu-ray is recorded on 50hz (PAL) and that won't run on a US PS3 or some BD players that don't support 50Hz (instead of the standard US 60Hz NTSC). Bottom line, great show, highly recommend it!Get more detail about Life (narrated by David Attenborough) [Blu-ray].

Alice in Wonderland (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Buy Now

I saw the coming attractions to Alice In Wonderland in an IMAX theater, in 3-D, in summer of 2009. I actually CLAPPED and cheered at the end of the coming attractions, which is the first time in my life I have ever clapped and cheered a coming attraction. So I was anxious to see the whole movie, and I had to wait 8 full months for it to be released... a long wait... but well worth waiting for.

I won't go into the details of WHY I loved the movie... I loved it, and I want to have it in my library...

But IF IT IS NOT IN 3D, I will not buy it for home viewing, and I will not recommend it to anybody.

Alice in Wonderland, the movie, gets 5 stars in 3D, and zero stars in 2-D. I won't even THINK of buying it in 2-D.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (+ BD-Live) [Blu-ray] Order Now

But he does, in the sixth installment of the Harry Potter epic. Once you read the seventh and final book, Dumbledore's death becomes clear in the context of his own story: you could say that he was already dead - just on borrowed time (given to him by Snape, the character we all love to hate). Of course, with such detailed and complex stories it's always a challenge to bring them to the screen in a way that makes sense, and especially for HP and the Half-Blood Prince it's essential to have read all the books up to and including this one before you see the film. The backstories, the build-up, the carefully crafted plots and subplots and all of their twists and turns can become muddled and confusing without having read the books first, but the filmmakers have done a good job delivering the story. There are a few changes which don't seem to make a lot of sense; for instance the burning of the Burrow, and an anti-climactic kiss between Ginny and Harry in the Room of Requirement, but overall the story is as exciting on film as it is in the pages. What's really noteworthy about the climax of HBP is that Harry has all along been saying Snape and Draco are the bad guys, and lo and behold it looks as if he was finally right. But is he really? Look for the upcoming film versions of The Deathly Hallows, but read it first! Two or three times!
