Here's a hint on how to proceed when watching this film: THIS IS A MELODRAMA! Dino de Laurentis said as much while promoting the film when it was first released. Every costume, every facial expression, and much of the dialog was meant to be over the top (and it is). de Laurentis wanted the film to be like a comic book come to life.
