Purchase National Geographic: Sea Monsters - A Prehistoric Adventure (In 3-D) [Blu-ray]

when i got this dvd i knew it had to be good. national geographic usually do not fail me. the documentary tells the story of a female dolphin like prehistoric creature whose fossils were found 80 million years later. watching this in 3-d with the glasses is dreamlike and incredible. an added treat is the other sea creatures and great story and narration. discovery channel has always done good documentaries on dinosaurs now national geographic gets equal billing.Get more detail about National Geographic: Sea Monsters - A Prehistoric Adventure (In 3-D) [Blu-ray].

Order Death Proof [Blu-ray]

For an exploitation flick this one sure is slow. Plenty of mindless banter and girl talk but little action. The car chase at the end is great if you can stay awake for it. Pass on this and go for one of the films it emulates like Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, or just watch the far superior Planet Terror.Get more detail about Death Proof [Blu-ray].

Where To Buy Casino Royale [Blu-ray]

Without a doubt, this would have been a five-star action movie for me if it didn't lose focus briefly at the beginning of the final act, but it remains one of the finer Bond films. Craig's Bond is grittier than that of his predecessors, with some unresolved issues that make him dangerous, even to himself. Perhaps because this film is set at the beginning of Bond's career, he is neither as suave nor as at ease as the other Bonds, although he is every bit as likable.

The storyline is straightforward, at least in overview: in tracking down a bombmaker, Bond uncovers a broader terrorist presence that leads to a French financier, Le Chiffre, who literally weeps blood and who promises off-shore safe haven for terrorist funds. What the terrorists don't know is that Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) is using their funds for his own enrichment When Bond thwarts Le Chiffre's plan, all bets are off except at the casino, where Le Chiffre attempts to win back the sum before the terrorists get to him. As usual, Bond has no intention of letting Le Chiffre succeed. And also as usual, there is a Bond girl, Vesper Lynd (Eva Green).

All the actors, including Judi Dench as the authoritative M, fit their roles admirably. But since most people watch the Bond movies for the blow-'em-up, adrendaline-saturated scenes, the real question is whether it is an exciting movie. The answer is yes, except for the flabbiness mentioned in the first paragraph.

Evangelion: 1.11 You Are Not Alone [Blu-ray] Get it now!

I just finished watching this weekend and I am amazed on how better it is in hidef. All the CG that they added/redo, it is all worth it. It is like watching it again for the first time. A must for all Evangelion fans out there. I've been a follower since the late 90's and still am. The only reason why I didn't give a full five star is they did not include the original intro and end credits songs from the TV series as part of the special features. I hope that they include it in the 2.0 or later. Other than that, I love it!Get more detail about Evangelion: 1.11 You Are Not Alone [Blu-ray].

Wild Pacific [Blu-ray] Order Now

This review is for most everyone else out there. I'm NOT a videofile so sifting through the barely discernable minutia of digital high def technical mertis and / or pitfalls is not my forte. The disc looked great on my plasma from start to finish, even the underwater footage. And Speaking of footage, there were many UNMATCHED camera shots here, even comapred to BBC's magnum opus, Planet Earth. I found the narration fine. As far as editing, the chapter selection needed some re-organization but as far as complaining about how long shots were held on someone's personal wish list? come on. Let's face it, after Planet Earth, it's hard for any nature program not to seem redundant, yet you don't feel that here. The human element as described clearly leaves the viewer with a new appreciation in some areas and a return to reality in others. So no - it's not all about critters, it's a better over view on ALL the elements influencing this previously poorly understood area of the planet.Get more detail about Wild Pacific [Blu-ray].

The Boondock Saints [Blu-ray] Right now

Irish bothers Connor and Murphy (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) get an epiphany after killing in self defense....God wants them to rid the world of evil. So, using guns and religion as weapons, they systematically wage a war on those in society who use and abuse those considered weak. Why not start with the mobsters who control the city and brutalize those who stand in their way. Realizing that there is more to these deaths that meet the eye, a somewhat unconventional FBI Agent Paul Smecker (William Defoe) arrives on the scene with headphones (he listens to opera) and a dedication to catching these vigilantes, although he secretly desires to join the duo. Running from some who want to kill them, while trying to rid the world of those deemed less desirable, Connor and Murphy meet their match in a gray haired killer released to catch them. As the story unravels, there are gun fights, comedic bantering, but most of all there is a sense that these two Irish brothers are doing the very things that people desire to do themselves. Handing out justice...being the judge, the jury and the executioner appeals to most, even an FBI Agent whose hands are tied usually by the law. So while their methods may appear to be brutal, we justify the actions and find some sense of hope that there are still those that stand for what is right. They are doing what we have all longed to do and one point or another. And although we could debate is doing the wrong thing for the right reasons justify their actions (i.e., breaking the law...murder is murder), it was great just seeing two people take a stand for something that they believe in and this is what made this storyline so endearing.

This movie had everything that made it great......there is comedy, violence, creative twists, and great acting that only a truly brilliant and creative director could bring to life. My first thought was that this movie could have been directed by Tarentino (who I absolutely love) and I know that I will not be the last person to say that after seeing both of their works. In short, Duffy's "Boondock Saints" had the same atmosphere and edgy wit and humor that a Tarentino flick would have, only better!

Anyway, I had never heard of this movie before, but picked it up on the chance that it would be somewhat entertaining. I was right and ended up renting Part 2. Definitely see it if you haven't had the chance already. It's brilliant!

Lowest Price Days of Heaven (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Bill (Richard Gere) is good-looking but going nowhere. His short temper and high hopes make it hard for him to keep a job, and when he attacks an abusive foreman in the turn-of-the-century Chicago steel mill where he makes a living, it's time for him to move on. Afraid of the social consequences, he and his girlfriend Abby (Brooke Adams) conceal the true nature of their relationship as they travel the rails out West with his little sister in search of work. That turns out to be convenient when the terminally ill landowner (Sam Shepard) takes an interest in Abby, and Bill hits upon a scheme to elevate their fortunes.

If the plot sounds like the usual fare, it's nothing like it in the execution. Malick's got a style of his own, and infuses this period piece with an elegance and simplicity that brings it to life. Nothing in this piece feels dated. It conveys its time and place with a freshness and authenticity that is unparalleled. The words of the young Linda (Linda Manz), her fresh and surprising observations on life, her sense of wonder and resignation, her combination of wisdom beyond her years with childlike naivete; the images of natural spontaneity, of insects and animals and elements, and of life untrammeled and apparently unawares; all lend to this film a poetic realism. It is a film whose images have lingered with me for a long time, and still feels vibrant and new, especially in its Criterion edition, which I just saw for the first time and was blown away by its beauty. An essential film.

I wish they'd been able to get Terrence Malick to speak on the commentary track. I know he prefers to speak through his images, and I can respect that, but the interviews I've read show him to be extremely thoughtful about his work and I would have liked to hear what he says about this film, which may be his best (though it's hard to compare).

Here's what comes with the Criterion DVD:
-A new, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Terrence Malick, editor Billy Weber, and camera operator John Bailey
-A new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack (with DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition)
-An audio commentary featuring Weber, art director Jack Fisk, costume designer Patricia Norris, and casting director Dianne Crittenden
-An interview with Richard Gere
-Video interviews with Bailey, cinematographer Haskell Wexler, and actor Sam Shepard
-and a booklet featuring an essay by (the always fascinating and insightful) critic Adrian Martin and a chapter from director of photography Nestor Almendros's autobiographyGet more detail about Days of Heaven (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray].

Low Price L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray]

I've been watching movies for almost 60 years, and "L.A. Confidential" is one of the most wildly entertaining films I've ever seen. It was so much fun, I didn't want it to end. (It's anything but a comedy -- but it's fun.)

The story borrows elements commonly found in "hard-boiled" detective fiction: loose dames, prostitution and pornography, homosexuality, police corruption, murdered partners, etc, etc, etc. It is, at least superficially, a broad re-imagining of "The Big Sleep", with an idealistic (but ambitious and hard-nosed) police officer (roughly) standing in for Sam Spade. Of course, given the nature of such novels, these similarities are to be expected. (There is no murdered chauffeur, however.)

The director wanted to stay away from "noir" tone and cliché, and he succeeds. Though set in 1953, "L.A. Confidential" seems modern. The performances -- from actors largely unknown at the time -- are perfect. One could not even imagine better.

The Blu-ray is a beautiful transfer, well-capturing the varied visual moods of LA and surroundings (as discussed in one of the excellent supplements). Some moments, though, appear to have been badly underexposed (as suggested by gray, rather than black backgrounds). Whether this was intentional is not clear, and it doesn't really detract.

Unless you're offended by the violence or subject matter, unreservedly recommended.

There is one rather surprising error -- "When Worlds Collide" was released in 1951, not 1953.Get more detail about L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray].

Cheapest Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (DVD + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

I had seen this movie at the theater. When we bought our Blu-ray DVD player, I decided to make this one of the first movies we watched. The color and detail are amazing - it is so hard to believe that this is done with computer animation. It is so life like. The character are really "fleshed out" in this one. Manny's approaching fatherhood, Diego's unrest, Sid's desire to be a "mommy" - just the entire movie is lots of fun. The script is incredible. Some of the punch lines are very funny. You can see where the creators "borrowed" from other movies like Jarassic Park, Indiana Jones, Journey to the Center of the Earth, etc. But it fits in so smoothly, you really don't care. The scene with the "laughing gas" is hysterical! I think adults as well as kids will love this film. Like I said, I got the Blu-ray and it's a whole different experience in movie watching.Get more detail about Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (DVD + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray].

Buy Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season [Blu-ray]

This season is the best season yet.Warning,if your a regilious person then try to remember this is just an act. This season has alot to deal with heaven & hell, demons vs angels. The show is very entertaining, both jensen and jared are good actors, along with other cast members that contribute to this production.
Episode list:
Sympathy for the Devil#1
Lucifer's prison has been opened by Sam's successful attempt to kill Lilith. As the gate to Hell fully opens, the Winchester brothers are rescued by an unknown force and teleported into a plane, watching in horror the start of the Apocalypse. In an encounter with the prophet Chuck it is revealed that Castiel was blown to pieces by an archangel. When they try to figure out what to do next, they are attacked by their old enemy Meg and a possessed Bobby. The brothers learn that there is a weapon strong enough to defeat the Devil--Michael's Sword. They set off to find it, but instead burst upon Zachariah, who reveals that Dean is in fact Michael's Sword, the human vessel of the Archangel Michael. However, he refuses to provide his mind and body for the angels' plans even when Zachariah threatens to kill Sam and Bobby. As Zachariah begins to torture Sam and Dean, Castiel, miraculously revived, appears and tells him to leave. Meanwhile, Lucifer is trying to convince his own vessel, a man whose family has been slaughtered by a killer, to let him take over his body so he can face God and seek justice.
Good God, Y'All!#2
Bobby is still in the hospital and quite bitter about being in a wheelchair. When Castiel arrives, Bobby orders him to heal him, but Castiel says he's been cut off from Heaven. He tells Dean that he wants to find God, the only one who can defeat Lucifer. Castiel borrows Dean's pendant, which has the ability to indicate God's presence by glowing brightly. Suddenly, Bobby receives a frantic call from Bobby's hunter friend Rufus, who is in a town swarming with demons. Sam and Dean go to the town and can't find Rufus, but instead find Ellen Harvelle. She and Jo have been hunting together and Jo has disappeared like Rufus. When they do find Jo and Rufus, they appear to be possessed by demons--and strangely, they seem to think Sam, Dean and the others are also possessed. In fact, the demons are no demons at all, but hallucinations brought about by War, one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. Sam and Dean hunt him down and cut off his ring finger, because his ring controls the hallucinations. In the end, Sam tells Dean he thinks that they should go their separate ways, and so they part.
Free to Be You and Me#3
Not sure he trusts himself anymore, Sam decides to give up hunting and live a "normal" life. At night, his dead girlfriend Jessica visits him and tells him that people can never change despite their efforts. Dean, intending on stopping the Apocalypse, continues hunting on his own and teams up with Castiel to find the Archangel Raphael, as Castiel believes Raphael knows God's location. They find Raphael's vessel and lure him out, but are no closer to finding God's location. Raphael even claims that God is dead. After fighting off fellow hunters who wanted Sam to drink demon blood in order to exorcise some demons, he gets another late-night visit from Jessica, who turns out to be Lucifer disguising himself as Sam's deceased girlfriend all along. He says that Nick's body was just Plan B, and that his true vessel is supposed to be Sam. He is convinced that eventually, without any trickery or lies, Sam will agree to be his vessel, although Sam adamantly disagrees.
The End#4
Sam calls Dean late at night and says that he wants to rejoin Dean in the battle of the Apocalypse, but Dean tells Sam that they're better off apart. Later, Dean awakens five years in the future in an abandoned city and is attacked by humans who have been infected with a demonic disease, the Croatoan virus. After Dean has escaped the assault, Zachariah appears to him and explains that this world is the result of Dean saying no to being Michael's vessel. He then discovers a group of survivors led by his Future self. When he sneaks into the camp, he is captured by his Future self, who explains that the virus is Lucifer's endgame for destroying mankind. Supposedly, Sam did not survive the showdown. Later it is revealed that Sam didn't die, but did in fact say yes to Lucifer, thus letting him in. After having acquired the Colt from demons, Future Dean plans on killing Lucifer and ending the Apocalypse. Walking straight into a trap, Future Dean is killed by Lucifer. Lucifer reveals that, whatever choices Dean will make, he will always end up in the same situation. Lucifer leaves and Zachariah appears, teleporting Dean back to the year 2009. When Dean refuses to be Michael's vessel, even after he's seen what his decision might result in, Zachariah attempts to persuade him with force. Castiel saves Dean from Zachariah's wrath just in time. Ultimately, Dean and Sam reconcile and decide to begin hunting together again.
Fallen Idols#5
Sam and Dean are reunited and on the hunt again. They reach a small town and investgate a string of very strange murders. A man who has found James Dean's car "Little Bastard" is found dead as if he has been involved in a major car crash. Another man is murdered by someone who looks just like Abraham Lincoln. Suspecting that the murders are the work of famous ghosts, the boys do research at the local wax museum where Sam is attacked by what seems to be the ghost of Mahatma Gandhi. Shortly afterwards, two girls report to the police that their friend was kidnapped by Paris Hilton, which leaves the brothers speechless. After finding peculiar seeds in the victims' stomachs, they break into the museum's construction area where they do find Paris Hilton--who is in fact a pagan god in disguise, trying to settle down after its old home, a deep forest in Eastern Europe, has been cut down. By touching their possessions, the god can turn itself into famous people and kill their fans in order to feed on their blood. While fighting the Leshi, Dean references Padalecki's and Hilton's role in House of Wax, saying he has never seen it. In the end, Sam kills "Paris Hilton" with an iron axe. Before leaving town, Dean tells Sam that starting the Apocalypse isn't his fault alone as he himself has broken the first seal and that they shouldn't think about the whole vessel thing too much but instead fight together.
I Believe the Children Are Our Future#6
In Alliance, Nebraska, people are being killed by practical joke devices such as itching powder and joybuzzers. On top of that, a very odd looking Tooth Fairy extracts a man's teeth. It turns out that an eleven-year-old boy named Jesse is the reason for all of this. Everything he believes becomes reality. After searching his birth records, Sam and Dean find out that the boy was adopted, so they visit his biological mother, who lives across the state. She tells the brothers that she was impregnated by a demon possessing her and gave up her child for adoption after giving birth to him. Castiel informs the Winchesters that Jesse is an Antichrist, a being half human, half demon, imbued with essentially unlimited powers. Therefore, an Antichrist would be Lucifer's special weapon in the war against Heaven and, as a serious threat, needs to be eliminated. However, Sam and Dean believe that Jesse would not turn evil if he is taken somewhere safe. When they try to convince Jesse to come with them, the demon which conceived him interferes and pins them to the wall. It is again possessing Jesse's biological mother. After listening to the demon, Jesse renders it unable to speak in order to hear what Sam has to say. Sam tells Jesse that he has a choice and that it will haunt him forever if he makes the wrong decision. After that, Jesse exorcises the demon from his mother. Pretending he wants to say goodbye to his foster parents, he goes upstairs and vanishes into thin air, protected by his powers, which makes it impossible to track him down.
The Curious Case of Dean Winchester#7
Mysterious deaths caused by inexplicable aging lead Sam, Dean and Bobby to a warlock named Patrick, who gambles for high stakes. He challenges people to a poker game in which they don't play for money, but for life years represented by magical poker chips. Bobby sees this game as an opportunity to escape his wheelchair and accepts Patrick's challenge. Losing the game, he begins to age rapidly. Dean wants to save Bobby and challenges the warlock to win back Bobby's lost years to prevent him from dying. He bets 50 years, of which he uses 25 to reverse Bobby's aging process. However, Dean can't keep up with the warlock's poker skills and loses, which causes him to age. Together, the Winchester brothers and Bobby try to find a way to save Dean. They get unexpected help from Patrick's accomplice, who thinks that living forever is not natural and causes too much pain. She gives them a spell, one which can reverse the effects of Patrick's magic. Sam challenges the warlock to a poker game while Bobby and Dean perform the ritual. One ingredient of the spell is a trace of Patrick's DNA, so they use a toothpick supposedly used by him. The spell turns out to be ineffective since the toothpick was not really used by Patrick. When frantically searching for another object with the warlock's DNA on it, Dean suffers a heart attack, but Sam wins the game just in time to save Dean.
Changing Channels#8
While investigating a homicide apparently executed by the Incredible Hulk, Sam and Dean are trapped inside TV land. They suspect the Trickster is the reason for it, and attempt to track him down. Sam suggests they ask the Trickster for help fighting the Apocalypse, and Dean reluctantly agrees. They encounter him several times, but are unable to trap him until Dean remembers a warning from Castiel about the Trickster, which leads the brothers to believe the Trickster is in fact a far more powerful creature than a simple demi-god. They manage to lure him and trap him in a burning circle of holy oil. Since the Trickster is unable to escape, it confirms their suspicions that he is actually an angel. He applauds them and admits he's actually the Archangel Gabriel, who voluntarily fell from Grace several years before as he grew tired of watching his brothers fight each other. He trapped Sam and Dean because he wants them to agree to be Lucifer's and Michael's vessels, respectively, in order to end the Apocalypse. Gabriel also states that the lives of Sam and Dean mirror the lives of Lucifer and Michael, since Sam rebelled against his father while Dean remained obedient. Dean still refuses to say yes to becoming a vessel, but before they leave, he frees Gabriel from his trap and accuses him of simply being too afraid to stand up against his own family.
That's just a taste of what it's like. Don't want to spoil any more.

Where To Buy Where the Wild Things Are [Blu-ray]

I don't mind sad children's movies. I do, however, want some glimmer of hope or redemption at the end, which this movie did not offer. Max is an obviously troubled child who should be getting lots of attention and guidance at home, which he is not. One night after acting out and getting in trouble, he runs away to a desolate island of his mind and encounters several monsters, each representing various aspects of his own emotions. These monsters are constantly in conflict, just as the feelings within Max. He tries to be their king to bring some order to these unhappy monsters but without success. He finally abandons the miserable creatures to return home, which seems to indicate that he is unable to cope with his own inner turmoil and has given up. The sight of these pathetic monsters crying and watching Max leave left me feeling very sad and troubled.Get more detail about Where the Wild Things Are [Blu-ray].

Last time I looked, the Karen and other heavily armed national minorities in Burma had a deal with the evil SLORC dictators about splitting the proceeds from smuggling. I think it was fifty-fifty.

Why didn't Rambo just tell the Karen to call the Burmese army, hand over some teak wood, and save the day?

As usual, Johnny has no reality check when it comes to world politics (although he's good as an archer). I mean, last time he aided al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan!

What a guy.

Coral Reef Adventure (IMAX) [Blu-ray]

I agree with the other reviewers who were disappointed with this DVD. The video is only about 40 minutes long, and way too much time was spent watching divers on the boat getting ready to dive, viewing Fiji greeting customs, and hearing that global warming is a really bad thing. I fully agree with that, but I don't need to be "educated" all the time - I get it, now let me watch coral reefs, and fish, in amazing hi-def. I'll write a check for the rest! I don't dive, and I never will. Videos like this can be my substitute for the real thing. The actual coral reef photography was really pretty amazing in Blu-Ray, there just wasn't that much of it and that is what I was looking for, not a South Pacific travelogue and environmental education. There are quite a few of these I-Max videos available in Blu-Ray and I'm sure the photography is amazing. Based on experience with this video I'll try these out on Netflix, see if they really devote the video to the the subject advertised in the title, and then decide if I want to really buy for myself. I guess I give it a 5 for the (way too short) actual reef video, and a 1 for the rest of the dreck.Get more detail about Coral Reef Adventure (IMAX) [Blu-ray].

The Day After Tomorrow [Blu-ray] Review

I saw "The Day After Tomorrow" when it first hit the theaters and enjoyed it very much. I recently bought it on DVD and found, in it, many ideas and concepts that I had missed the first time around.

This movie has been attacked because, among other things, the events happen too quickly to represent reality accurately. Well, after some investigation into the subject, I learned that this scenario is probably exactly what happened at the beginning of the last Ice Age over 20,000 years ago.

This was referenced briefly in the scene in the Museum of Natural History when the staring characters were shocked to learn that the Woolly Mammoth displayed was found with fresh food in it's mouth and stomach (true story re: NY Museum of Natural History)indicating that it had been frozen solid in a matter of minutes or even seconds.

The movie is based on the book: "The Coming Super Storm" by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber (recommended reading).

I recommend to ignore the "naysayers" and look at the Science implied with fresh eyes and open mind.

V: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray] This instant

V is one of the best new shows on television - the best in my opinion. It pays homage to the original 1980 miniseries, but it uses modern themes to appeal to today's audience. The characters (well, some of them) are very likable, especially the V's cold (and yet ooh so hot) leader Anna, played by Morena Baccarin, and the resistance group with a mix of FBI Agent Erica, played by the ever-watchable Elizabeth Mitchell, a Priest, a V-turned-human, and a Machiavellian take-no-prisoners mercenary. A lot of people watch for the sci-fi premise, which seems very well done (although I don't have too much experience). The main reasons I watch are actually the characters and the suspense. We know that the V's are here to exploit us, and they're being nice to us so we know they need us for something... but we don't know what yet.

Like every other show out there, V does have some inconsistencies in the plot, and you have to suspend disbelief a little more than you'd like. But overall, it's an awesome entertaining show that hooked me from the start. I hope ABC has the foresight to renew it for a second season, but either way, I can't wait to get my DVDs!Get more detail about V: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray].

Django [Blu-ray] Immediately

If you're a fan of the spaghetti western, then 'Django' is simply a must for your DVD collection.

This film is a classic, and hits all the buttons that you'd expect in a first rate alternative western: the minimalist backdrop, the high body count, the salon girls flashing their stockings, gold, the army fort, the saloon bar with its nonchalant owner, and, of course, the mysterious sharpshooter dressed in black and with piercing eyes.

Django is 88 minutes in a dark spaghetti western world where life is cheap and human qualities eventually try to shine through.

This DVD is a great offering as it includes a number of extras including an interview with Franco Nero (it's hard to imagine that he was only 23 years old when he starred in this). And as for the eye candy, well, there's the Italian beauty, Loredana Nusciak (who gets nine men killed in the opening sequence).

Overall, Django won't disappoint you if have a taste for very gritty westerns. Yes, there's extreme violence here - in particular, the ear-chopping-off scene (which got the film banned in some countries) but in reality there's little blood and the film has some serious undertones - such as racism, greed, deception and the power of weapons of mass destruction.

So go on, take a ride with Django.Get more detail about Django [Blu-ray].

Batman Returns [Blu-ray] Best Quality

I first saw Batman Returns in 1992 when it was released in theaters. I was 10 years old then, and to this day it remains my favorite movie of all time. Sure, it has all the elements of a good movie - action, romance, comedy - but I also think it's a really good psychological study as well. I like seeing how a person transforms from one thing to another and am fascinated by the concept of dual personalities. That's what a lot of movies today are missing - character development and insight into the motivations behind their actions. It will really get you thinking about the thin line that separates mental instability from sheer brilliance (for both heroes and villains alike). I have never followed the comics, so I can't compare these characterizations to how they're traditionally "supposed" to be, but at this point I have a difficult time picturing Catwoman, The Penguin, and even Batman himself, any other way. Perfect casting all around.

Having gone through a VHS copy years ago and acquiring multiple DVD editions since, I was thrilled to see that Batman Returns has finally been released on Blu-Ray, separate from last year's franchise box set which I didn't really want to shell out the money for. The generous special features included here are identical to the most recent 2-disc DVD special edition that includes a 1992 behind the scenes featurette along with some other Batman related documentaries. You'll also find the official music video for "Face To Face," the lusciously hypnotic Siouxsie and the Banshees song that plays in the background during Shreck's Max-squerade Ball scene. All this is contained on just one disc, which is nice. Unfortunately, beyond the slightly improved sound and sharper picture, which may or may not be noticeable depending on your TV set, I `ll have to admit there isn't much else for incentives *if* you already have the special edition DVD. A cast retrospective would have been great to see on this new Blu-Ray version, but alas, no such luck. As I said, it's my favorite movie, so I wanted it to be as high-def and up-to-date as possible, and most definitely consider the Blu-Ray release to be worthy of 5 stars in and of itself. But if you're a more casual fan then there's probably no need to buy virtually the same thing twice. Otherwise, get it now!Get more detail about Batman Returns [Blu-ray].

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season [Blu-ray] Get it now!

I get home from work after 11pm, and every Friday when there's a new ep of SMALLVILLE, I have to watch it that same night from my DVR.

I have kind of a love-dislike relationship with this show. The biggest flaw of the season was supposed to be its highlight, and that's the ABSOLUTE JUSTICE event. This was supposed to be a massive game-changer, written by comic book author extraordinare Geoff Johns (who's been writing Superman and Green Lantern for a long time now), and it just totally missed the mark. A lame villain responsible for the deaths of some of the greatest heroes in history? Nuh-uh. This was the chance to go battle royale and really kick an inordinate amount of butt by throwing in some c-list villains. But no... they shot wide and it ended up being a total letdown.

However, the rest of the season has got me revved up in a big way.

Lowest Price Close Encounters of the Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray]

There are all 3 versions included in this offering. The Blu-Ray transfer seems to maybe have been done mostly for the original version. There are places in the Special Edition and Director's cut versions that seem NOT to have been put through the Blu-Ray process... for example, in the darker scenes the graininess seems more evident. When Roy Neary is out at those R/R tracks and is lost and has his Encounter of the 2nd kind, there is quite a lot of graininess going on. Also at the beginning in the sandstorm and for other "night" scenes... however, during the rest of the film the picture is really great. So, once again it looks as though the people doing the Blu-Ray transfer AGAIN cut corners and tried to save money by not applying the process to the whole film. - Bottom line, this is a great movie and I think I can overlook the fact it is not perfect and still enjoy all 3 versions. But, the PQ is not pristine nor perfect, just mostly great.Get more detail about Close Encounters of the Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition) [Blu-ray].

Low Price In Bruges [Blu-ray]

There is nothing like watching Colin Farrell act with his native accent. Pair that with an excellent script that is at times heartbreaking as well as hilarious, an excellent cast, and a beautiful setting (having been to Bruges, this film manages to capture much of its medieval splendor) and you have an unmissable film. Farrell definitely earned the Golden Globe he got for his performance in this movie as an internally town hitman. Give it a chance and be sucked into a world of organized crime, a screwed-up love story, and a beautiful city.Get more detail about In Bruges [Blu-ray].

Save The Young Victoria [Blu-ray]

The Young Victoria is a nice movie. It's so nice that everybody mostly gets along most of the time. Then, almost two hours later, it's over. It's a pretty and pleasantly acted movie. Not that it's boring per se. There are hints of conflict-- the lightly abusive step-father who wants to use the future queen's power for his own agenda (although it's never clear what his agenda is--maybe he's a real do-gooder), the mother who chooses her man above her daughter, the charming Prime Minister who has a reputation for manipulating women and is always hanging about (and what woman wouldn't want Paul Bettany in period costume always within view?), the odds and ends of royals from here and there who promote their own candidates for husband of the queen-to-be. Oh and there's that truly nasty business when the head of the other political party is rather put-out because the newly crowned monarch won't include any women from his team on her list of ladies-in-waiting. Zounds! From a feminist perspective, the queen, being a queen, is required to ask her chosen mate for his hand in marriage, instead of the other way around, which is a fun change. But who will she ask?!!!! Who will it be?!!! Who?!!!!

Well, duh.

The most unexpected nugget the film leaves viewers with is that at one point in time, the Queen after whom the Victorian era, with its prim furnishings and tightly-clenched sphincters was named, was a cute, fun girl who liked to dance and knew a good man when she saw one. She even seemed to like sex, albeit within a monogamous relationship. That really is nice, isn't it?

Discount The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo [Blu-ray]

Released just in time to happily mesh with the American publishing advent of the last book in the Millennium trilogy by the late Stieg Larsson, this film adaptation of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" should provide admirers of Lisbeth Salander (hacker extraordinaire and victim of a renegade faction of the Swedish social system) with more than enough fan-tastic material to orbit them into "Girl" heaven.

Director Niels Arden Oplev depicts a Sweden icy in its efficiency; its cleanliness apparent in its scenes of smooth running undergrounds, bridges and autobahns. Beneath the crisp perfection of the surroundings, a misogynist undercurrent flares with the overt intensity of a laser as illustrated by the instantaneous hatred displayed by a pack of leather-clad youths subjugating a young woman to physical abuse in the subway, a guardian of mature years attacking his ward and a teenager subjected to repeated rape and beatings. Director of photography, Eric Kress, intentionally showcases gritty up close and personal full screen faces of the film's protagonists where large pores, warts and all contribute to the feeling of an underlying lack of social airbrushing in spite of all the repressed punctiliousness of both the Scandinavian urban and rural scenes.

The film's leads, most notably Noomi Rapace as the unconventional Salander and Michael Nyqvist as crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist, more than adequately do justice to their fictitious counterparts. Rapace's waiflike appearance, economy of motion and smoldering glares bring the understandably sullen Lisbeth to toxic life. Nyqvist's vaguely Charleton Heston sensuality and amused sophistication fleshes out the likeable and idealistic Blomkvist but writers Rasmus Heisterberg and Nikolaj Arcel omit the character's casual sexual relationships with Millenium editor-in-chief Erika Berger, Cecelia Vanger and former babysitter Harriet. Grant it, the film, running over two and a half hours, has little time to waste on gratuitous sexual footage and exploring instead Blomkvist's woes as a convicted journalist and Salander's smoldering rage regarding her tempestuous and unforgivable childhood in a more than adequate adaptation of the novel's main plotline: the collaboration of the two to investigate and resolve a forty-year old murder on an isolated island populated by a wealthy industrial family. Kress again does a more than admirable job of interjecting B&W stills into key moments of revelation during the investigation. In particular is the forty year old photo of the missing/murdered Harriet, enigmatically staring out from her photo frame like an avenging Mona Lisa.

With never a slow moment, the film whets the appetite for more Salander victory moments--the over fifty art house audience with which I viewed this film was more than familiar with Lisbeth's special skills, dark moods and vindictive motivations; lively conversation before and after the film suggested a group already well-versed through the pages of the novels. Each time Salander displayed her ample hacking abilities, unselfconsciously took what she wanted and knowingly puzzled out a conundrum of Chinese proportions, the audience burst into appreciative laughter or applause, suggesting that the cult of the underdog as epitomized by the tattooed and pierced eighty-something pound, 24 year old Salander was alive and well admired by the sector of American senior citizens who frequent long foreign speaking films with English subtitles.

This reviewer's disappointment came only once with the film's exclusion of the last scene of the novel where Salander, in observing love interest Blomkvist with long-time lover Erika Berger, feels pangs of the ever familiar betrayal, jealousy and resentment of which she has grown accustomed. Seeing Salander's vulnerability in this context would have segued me right into the next film with no degree of difficulty. I also wondered if those who had not read the book prior to seeing the film had difficulty keeping all the plot threads tucked neatly into a well-organized ball.

Bottom line? Director Niels Arden Oplev's adaptation of journalist Stieg Larsson's 600+ page crime thriller, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" successfully entertains and captivates its audience with a faithful representation of the first in a series of three films based on the Millennium trilogy recounting the trials and tribulations of an abused and misunderstood girl with extraordinary powers of perception and technological skills. Cinematography by Eric Kress features a lovely and diffused snow-flaked Sweden compared to the harsh depravity of some of it inhabitants as seen baldly under the glare of too bright light that show every crease, wrinkle and enlarged pore. Noomi Rapace's performance as Lisbeth smarts with an indignation and nonconformity applauded by audiences of all ages and mindsets. A thoroughly entertaining and compelling storyline underlined by special skills makes this one a must see for all those who love the crime genre. Filmed in Swedish with English subtitles. Mature themes and graphic violence not intended for viewing by young children. Highly Recommended.

Purchase Die Hard [Blu-ray]

I admit that I do find a lot to like about Die Hard, however calling it the best action film in history is ridiculous. Most of what to like comes in the form of acting. Bruce Willis gives the best performance of his career and Alan Rickman makes a great if a bit over the top villain. In my mind Bruce is what makes the movie watchable. He is able to make the hero an everyman and is able to balance being a tough guy with showing his sensative side. Not to mention the amount of laughs he is able to create. Another positive is that for the most part the action is realistic which makes some of the scenes very thrilling. Man he was such a badass in this movie. However there is a lot to dislike in this film. For one the plot is nothing special to say the least. Another problem is that the police are portrayed as complete morons. I also felt that the film ended on a poor note. The showdown between Bruce and the villains in the end was goofy and what you would expect from any other action movie. In the end Bruce is the reason that Die Hard is as popular as it is. If Stallone or someone else had starred it would be extremely boring and just be another laughable action flic. The movie's plot is so uninspired I don't even think some other top of the line actors could have saved it. Bruce just happened to be the right man for this job. All in all "Die Hard" is an enjoyable film but I wouldn't call it must see entertainment.Get more detail about Die Hard [Blu-ray].

Where To Buy Black Hawk Down [Blu-ray]

That film is revealing about the vanity that leads to military defeat. The vanity of going out for three weeks and launching an offensive at the end of the sixth week to prove things are progressing and improving. Indeed. But vanity it is when one forgets Somalia is not a baseball court, or is it field we should say? And it was in 1992-1993 a civil war and nothing else and Americans were not welcome in that mess. Vanity to the point of instructing the soldiers going out in that Sunday afternoon offensive that it was going to last about thirty minutes, so that they did not even take their night equipment. And of course the targeted people knew the Americans were arriving and they were ready to welcome them in the bullfight arena of Mogadishu's streets. And one helicopter came down and a second one after that. And dozens of American GIs found themselves trapped in the streets and some buildings with hundreds if not thousands of snipers on the roofs everywhere with rocket launchers and that level of weapons. And then instead of retreating as fast as possible, and the defeat was clear within twenty minutes, or let's say an hour, they insisted on going on and attacking on and on and getting deeper and deeper into the trap. More stubborn than I you die. And nineteen GIs died, but of course what was it when compared with one thousand, at least one thousand, dead Somalis, including children and women. And two weeks later finally Bill Clinton got his feet back on earth and got the GIs out. We can always say those nineteen GIs died in vain and are or were heroes, but frankly what about the one thousand Somalis who were killed on their own soil, and what good did these deaths bring to Somalia or to the world? Nothing, absolutely nothing, except the absolute conviction in the heads of these Somalis fighting for power that they were right since troops were coming from so far away to fight against them and be defeated. As one of them could say, there can't be peace without victory, and I would add there can't be peace as long as foreign soldiers are getting mixed in such problems that are none of our concerns, even if we must condemn these autocratic, feudal war lords and governments in the name of universal human and civil rights, but once again peace and democracy cannot be exported like a bag of rice with weapons and grenades to wrap them in. The film is sadly realistic, though it did not prevent the USA from starting again in Afghanistan and in Iraq. When will simple sanity come back to the minds of American leaders?

Shop For Up in the Air [Blu-ray]

For each of the three feature films Jason Reitman has directed, he has consistently set the bar very high for the source material he willing to adapt. While no source material will probably ever equal that which inspired Thank You for Smoking, Walter Kirn's novel is at least in the same league. While I'm not normally prone to lavish praise on George Clooney, after seeing his performance I would be hard pressed to cast another in the role of Ryan Bingham. He is confident without being smug with a disarming charm is mild enough to keep from raising undue suspicion. And, curiously enough, he is genuinely careful to break the bad news to the soon-to-be-unemployed as painlessly as possible with their pride not only intact but even bolstered.

The rising drama of the story comes when a very bright and even more ambitious young graduate proposes a means of completely streamlining the human element of what Ryan Bingham does in favor of a computer screen and a T-1 connection to the Internet. It's difficult to say whether it is understandable or ironic that Bingham would take such offense to the notion, but he is certainly offended! His punishment for not keeping that opionion to himself? He gets to personally train the young woman who made the proposal for virtual firing. At first, he is incredulous but he quickly realizes that this is really the best way to make his point and make it stick!

The reason I so loved Thank You for Smoking was that it made NO apologies for what it was, an absolutely ruthless satire! Unlike it or Juno, this at times tries a little too hard to not offend the sensibilities of a mainstream audience. Great premise and great direction, but I do wish some of the same ruthlessness that marked Reitman's first two films was present here as well. There should have been a menagerie of women with whom Ryan Bingham would cavort before he tried to make things work with one. And the second to last scene should have been him looking at all of these other women and feeling even more distant from that opposite sex than ever. That, for me at least, would have made the romantic elements of this story far less formulaic.

But, all in all, this film deserved far more attention that it received. It should have been a _real_ contender for best picture and not that mindless slop that Cameron was serving up! The Blu-ray disc is a worthy addition to the collection of anyone who cherishes intelligent films over special effects extravaganzas.Get more detail about Up in the Air [Blu-ray].

The Messenger [Blu-ray]

I take with great seriousness some of the critical reviews, but on balance have to come down in favor of five stars and an enthusiastic recommendation of this movie and its actors. While I know little of current military casualty notification procedures, over-all this movie resonates with my own past as a Marine Corps infantry officer (40 years ago) and I found several things compelling:

1) America does not see enough of the down side of war. From 935 documented lies by the Bush-Cheney Administration to stark ignorance and corruption as the Obama-Biden Administration sells out to the military-intelligence-industrial pork complex, to the absolute and utterly immoral concealment from the public of the actual number of amputees including many many multiple amputees and the rising number of suicides, I find the disconnect between the public and reality to be catastrophic.

2) For me, these two characters are portrayed superbly, in detail. In my own life as a former spy we were obscenely proud of having the highest rates of alcoholism, adultery, divorce, and suicide in the US Government, and I have 19 professional suicides and 1 personal suicide in my life to date. The depth of the pain felt by those who survive was well-portrayed here.

3) The humanity of the protagonist and of the surviving widow, and the nuances of how that developed, were fully developed and expertly acted. This movie held my attention in detail for the duration.

The Jackal (Combo Blu-ray and Standard DVD) [Blu-ray] Review

The Jackal is one of my favorite movies of all time. This review is not of the movie, but some technical aspects. As far as the picture, the 1080p is a stunning improvement over dvd. Content is one double sided flipper disc: one side the BD, the other the dvd. You can't play both at the same time, but fortunately I have my old single dvd copy which I'm keeping. You may be wondering why? Because Universals put the director audio commentary, as well as extras (the making of), on the dvd, not the BD side! Very frustrating. Fortunately I have 2 BD players to run both if I ever need the 2nd audio channel while watching the BD. However, the BD side does include 2 features which aren't a big deal: BD-live ticker (pop up facts), which you'll need online connection to. And scene access, by using the 4 colored buttons on your remote.Get more detail about The Jackal (Combo Blu-ray and Standard DVD) [Blu-ray].
